Why Is My Release Showing as "Various Artists"?

Why This Happens

Streaming services show a release under "Various Artists" when the tracks on it have different primary artists, or when a release is set up with multiple primary artists at the release level. The store cannot attribute the album to one artist, so it groups it under the generic "Various Artists" heading.

Is It a Problem?

For a genuine compilation featuring many different artists, "Various Artists" is correct and expected. But if this is your project and you wanted it on your own artist page, it can split your release away from your profile and confuse listeners.

How to Keep a Release on Your Own Profile

  1. Set one primary artist at the release level (you).
  2. Use "featuring" credits for guests instead of adding them as additional primary artists on every track. See Mandatory artist roles in a release and Participant roles.
  3. Only use multiple primary artists when the project is genuinely a joint or compilation release.

Already Live as Various Artists?

If your release went live as "Various Artists" but should be under your profile, the fix is usually a metadata correction. Editing the release may be possible depending on its state. See How to Update a Release After Distribution, or open a support ticket with your release details and we will advise.
