What Is an IPI / CAE Number?

Definition

An IPI number (Interested Party Information), historically called a CAE number, is a unique global ID assigned to a songwriter, composer, or publisher. It is used by Performing Rights Organizations and publishers worldwide to identify you and make sure your publishing royalties reach you correctly.

IPI vs ISWC vs ISRC

  • IPI/CAE identifies a person or company (a songwriter or publisher).
  • ISWC identifies a composition (the song). See What Is an ISWC?
  • ISRC identifies a recording. See What Are ISRC and UPC Codes?

Where Do You Get One?

You do not get an IPI from your distributor. It is issued by your Performing Rights Organization (PRO) when you register as a writer, or by your publishing administrator. Once you join a PRO such as ASCAP, BMI, PRS, or your local society, you are assigned an IPI number.

Why It Matters

Your IPI ties every song you register to you across the global royalty system. If you write your own music, having an IPI (through your PRO) is part of collecting your full publishing income, which is separate from the master royalties InterSpace pays you.
